Crysis Remastered Review [PC] - Gameplay Changes & some Bugs (Medium settings)

Crysis/Warhead are two of my favorite games and I've played an install of Crysis on Steam quite extensively with the Tactical Expansion mod. I love C4'ing jeeps and driving them into bases and generally pretending I'm the Predator. The remastered release caught me by surprise yesterday - I had seen the trailer but lost track of the release date and was pretty happy to find it was out.
Anyway, I had some thoughts based on my experiences regarding gameplay:
First off, my PC specs:
  • i7 7700k overclocked to 5 Ghz (recommended i5 7700k / minimum i5-3450)
  • 32 Gb DDR4 3000Mhz RAM (recommended: 12GB / minimum 8GB)
  • EVGA gtx 1070 GPU with a slight overclock in MSI (recommended 1660ti / minimum 1050ti)
  • Acer X34P monitor (ultrawide 2k / 120hz)
Graphics settings
Asking Crysis to set optimal settings changed all my graphics options to medium (which gave me some chest pains). Still, I'm definitely dropping some frames. At medium settings I doubt this is hardware limitations and suspect its just poor optimization, but its just a feeling. When the 2080ti's drop to $5 each I'll maybe buy a few and go quadruple SLI and see how it runs ;)
Gameplay changes (in no particular order)
  • First off, nanosuit mode control is defaulted to match Crysis 2/3 where Q is Armor and E is Cloak, with space/shift activating speed/strength as needed. I'm not a fan of this and fortunately the settings do have a "classic mode" option which uses the mouse wheel click to open the suit options. Unfortunately, classic mode is a little clunky since there are still some changes. First off, armor mode, which was formerly the default in Crysis 1, has the hexagon overlay when in use like in 2/3, meaning 95% of my gameplay is encumbered by this texture over the corners of my field of view. I think I did find the image files for this overlay and may experiment with saving some transparent image files over these to see if I can remove them. Walking around in speed/strength mode is a good way to die quick on higher difficulties. I am happy to see that the power in the nanosuit seems to last longer than the original game, so you can run or cloak a few seconds further than you used to before recharging. When in Strength mode, you need to hold down Space for a second for the enhanced jump to take place, which is a little annoying.
  • The keys for secondary controls like weapon attachments and select fire modes are all changed around a little, which is annoying but not unexpected
  • Enemy AI seems to have had some improvements despite some bugs (which I'm sure will be patched eventually). I've noticed enemies flanking me on both sides and in higher difficulties I seem to die much quicker than in the original 2007 Delta mode, often within a few seconds even in Armor mode if 1-3 enemies are firing on me. Still, I will sporadically find enemies which do not engage and just stand still. At one point I was frustrated at not being able to enter a jeep until I noticed a North Korean soldier was calmly sitting in one of the back seats, probably hoping to escape my notice (it didn't work)
  • On a related note, enemies in Delta difficulty seem to have some serious aimbot. I barely have time to decloak before nearby enemies will snap their guns to my position. I admit I have not tried lower difficulties to see if this changes. Enemies on Delta are also serious bullet sponges, though headshots are still an instakill.
  • Sound design is gorgeous and is probably what I noticed most since I recently installed a decent subwoofer in my room. Here is a short video showing the Sniper Rifle sound. This is the highlight I honestly did not expect, but the sounds are great. The "nitrous" in the vehicles also sounds pretty cool
  • Physics may need some work. One of my favorite pastimes is to get into a jeep and bail right before ramming the car into another car, but about half the time it doesn't blow up. Generally everything in the game seems a little more robust as far as damage - even lobbing grenades/rifle grenades at vehicles rarely blows them up, though specifically shooting the gas tanks still works pretty well. This could be a positive or negative though - in both Crysis and Warhead I've died more than once by walking past a random barrel the wrong way
  • Maybe I just missed them the first few times, but I'd swear the C4 charges aren't introduced until much later in the game than usual
  • Graphics: Leaving this for last since I my hardware is a bit lacking, but I did see some gorgeous God Rays. I did not notice many other changes in ground or water textures
(Possible) Bugs I don't really count these against the game since I bet these could be easily patched out soon, but:
  • Crouch ("c") seems to need a double tap or is otherwise slow to respond
  • Changing graphics settings while paused in game has resulted in a .exe hang every time, forcing me to end the process
  • Hitboxes may need some adjustment. I'd swear some of the gun sights are almost sighted wrong given how much I'm missing some more distant but stationary targets
Well, I feel like I've wasted my time so far but its kinda my fault. Since I can't run the game on max settings I'm basically playing a non-modded "low res" version of Crysis when I have a perfectly find install on Steam (with a sexy weapon mod at that). Again, I don't count the bugs and rough patches in gameplay as negatives quite yet, I assume there will be some patching of the game in the near future.
