Should I Farm That - Fabul Castle Guard (FFIV #3) MK Event, Conqueror of Izander (King's Knight) raid rerun, and Triple Trials Edition
Woooooooooooohoooooooooooooooo! We're finally having this event! FFIV is the first FF game I played and I easily spent several hundred hours playing through the game (including successfully doing a no-save challenge). Did you know that farming 5 pink tails will net you enough gil to buy a couple stacks of megalixirs?I'll be dumping all of my meager resources on this banner to get young Rydia and I-can-better-study-the-art-of-not-being-such-an-asshole-by-not-wearing-my-helmet Kain. Even if I get 4 of each of them in 8 straight pulls, I won't stop until I have Yang and Edward too. Speaking of Edward, I really miss the ability to rename units in FF games. A little two letter switcheroo for Edward and he ends up with a very appropriate name: Coward. Then there's the never ending debate on whether or not Rydia's name is really supposed to be Lydia. Easily solved by changing her name to
EDIT: you can rename units in FFVII. Apparently I deprived myself of 13 seconds of fun.
EDIT2: You can rename guardian forces and one of the final bosses in a game I pretend doesn't exist.
When the Kid Rydia (Kydia?) was first released in JP I was annoyed that the younger form of Rydia was stronger than her adult form. Then I remembered that in the original version of the game, her base stats stayed the same despite her aging (in the later versions her adult form has better base stats). Other than not being able to learn any fire spells until a key story event, she can learn all her black magic spells as a child and has access to white magic (albeit weak spells). So other than not having access to stronger espers and better gear (which wasn't a big deal when you are at level 99 doing 9999 damage with flare which takes way less casting time than Bahamut or
Time to SIFT through the loot!

Shantotto's TMR for the low, low price of 12,000 pink tails. Order now while supplies last. Operators are standing by. +30% stats will always be welcome but isn't anything special. For newer players this is a must buy. Vets might as well get it but not a big deal if you don't.
EDIT: Looks like we're getting Gungnir instead. Meh.
Attack - Castle Warfare [materia]: +10% ATK, +20% phys dmg to humans Magic - Castle Warfare [materia]: +10% MAG, +20% magic dmg to humans
As we get more sources of killers, the value of these limited killer materias goes down. However, these are cheap so I suggest picking them up for any secondary physical attackers. The big downside is that bosses tend to be split races more often than not these days.
So when is this worth using? The correct answer is using u\lyrgard 's FFEquip tool to see what makes the most sense for you but if you want to see how having multiple other sources of killers affects the calculations, here's a quick analysis.
Assuming a base stat of 180 and a total stat of 1000 prior to adding the final materia (either the killer materia or a bigger stat boost), you can see that as the other sources of killers pile up, the effectiveness compared to a straight stat boost diminishes. Split race speeds up the process every quickly.
As you can see, a 50% stat boost is always better for a split race and only worse when one of these materias is the only source of killer. 40% is better with split races and catches up with 100% killers from other sources. 30% stat boost for split races is close enough at 75% killers and outright wins at 100%. For single race it gets close enough at 175% and pulls ahead at 200%.
As base stat goes up or total stat (before final materia) goes down, that stat boosts catch up to the killer materias faster. This is very important to consider as total ATK/MAG will generally go down as you add killer materias/equipment.
Base Stat | Total Stat (before final materia) | Total killer (other sources plus final materia) | Stat Bonus (from last materia) | Base damage | Split race base damage |

Other than the RNG bird trial, I can't think of a time when this would be useful and even then it probably won't help much because any unit with a high enough MAG for firaga to do meaningful damage is going to die if they get hit with a very strong physical attack. Firaga hasn't been a good spell since the days of barrage spamming... Letting your mages get hit with physical attacks went out of style when WoL finally got his 6⭐ form.
Frying Pan [hammer]: 85 ATK, Beloved's Encouragement (+100% sleep resist, Yang only), +15% HP (global buff per news. Not in data mine as of this post)
Kudos for the
In honor of that, here's a poem that is definitely not a very slightly modified version of a TMBG song:
Karate-man, Karate-man Hit on the head with a frying pan, Lives his life in a garbage can. Karate-man
Is he depressed or is he a mess? Does he feel totally worthless? Who came up with karate-man? Degraded man, karate-man.
EDIT: I came back to add the +15% HP buff and realized I never actually did an analysis of this. As long as this GLEX buff doesn't go the way of Kydia's esper skill dual casting, this will be a solid option for any tank that can use hammers. As far as a weapon for attacks... scroll down to the Thor's Hammer section...
Unit specific trust moogles:
As usual, the cheap ones are always worth getting when you consider the new 100% trust mixer feature in JP. The 8k ones are good if you have sufficient bonus units. The expensive ones aren't worth getting. Jp has the container moogles but those continue to remain in whale territory (high arena rank or extremely expensive 100% trust mixer reward).
Battle Rewards
+20% DEF [materia]: +20% DEFYou get this for clearing ELT with 4 or less units. I'm fairly certain that I'll never use this but not getting all missions eats away at my soul. On a side note, I'm very close to completing my quantitative analysis on what the bare minimum should be for materia to be useful for expeditions. (I'm building a script that determines success rates for all units for all expeditions. I still need to factor in innate stat boosts. That should only take a few more hours if I can manage to find the time. Once that's done I'll do the materia SIST post.)
+20% dark resist [materia]: +20% dark resist
Dark is still one of the harder elements to stack lots of resist gear. Unless you're swimming in Garnet or Kryla TMRs this is worth getting and keeping.
Mental Clarity [materia]: +20% ATK/SPR, +100% confusion resist
I guess the main use for this would be when you need to make your physical attackers slightly more durable against magic attacks. That means either you have no magic cover tank or battle mechanics favors a physical tank and the magic attacks aren't elmental. Confusion resist is always welcome although rarely needed. While I doubt I'll personally ever use this materia, I'll be keeping it for expedition units (40% total stat boosts are great for expeditions).
TMRs
Kydia's Pure-bred Summoner [materia]⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: +40% MAG, +20% SPR, increase +10% EVO damage.Unrestricted +40% to a stat is starting to become more common and this one doesn't disappoint at all. The SPR brings survivability or stronger heals for nukehealer units and the +10% EVO matches the craftable materia so you lose nothing when equipping this on a summoner. That said, unless you are prepping for Kydia's 7⭐ form or you regularly use a summoner in your party, there's not much of a need to farm this if you already farmed a bunch of William's TMR. While that one is tied to rod wielding, the only time you wouldn't have a rod on a mage would be if you are using a sword instead (in which case L&A is better anyway) or using Rem with a dagger only build because you are short on dual wield materias (damnit, just use someone else). EDIT: GL Sakura uses a spear so this is great for her too.
Atoning Dragoon Kain's Dragoon Helmet [helm]⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 40 ATK, 28 DEF
Only Prishe's hat and a couple STMRs have higher ATK for a headpiece in JP. Ignoring STMRs, this is the highest ATK on a helm by a good margin (Fohlen's is only 28). That's a pretty big boost for helm only TDH units. This is a solid option for farming if you have a unit that can make good use of it. I wouldn't bother if you have 28 ATK head pieces (Black Cowl, Rider's Helm) and you don't have the TDH gear to fully exploit the ATK.
Yang's Monk's Enlightenment [materia]⭐⭐⭐⭐: +40% ATK & +20% DEF when equipped with fist.
If you got Orochi from the DQ event and haven't farmed its TMR yet, you might want to do that one instead. Unrestricted stat boosts are just more flexible even with that lack for the DEF boost. This is solid option for a fist wielding counter tank if you can afford to drop your eHP a bit. The 10% improvement over unrestricted 30% materia isn't really big enough to make this a high priority especially when we consider that we'll be getting quite a few unrestricted 40% options other than Orochi in the future.
Coward's Vishnu Vest [clothes]⭐⭐⭐: 36 DEF/SPR, +15% MP, +25% fire, ice, lightning, light, and dark resist.
A very good elemental resist option if you don't have Rainbow Robe or need a boost to dark and one of the other elements at the same time (dark esper trials). This is one of the few 3⭐ TMRs I would consdier actively farming or moogling if I had an immediate need for it (I don't and probably never will though). DEF/SPR stats are decent but way too low to consider farming just for them. As always any source of MP boost is somewhat useful for MK bonus units you don't want to level.
King's Knight
I did a write up for KK when it first ran but that was back in the "quick and lazy" days. I think I'll just redo it rather than embarass myself with the old post...
There is a strong elemental theme with these items. All of them are either a wepaon with an element or provides an elemental resist. There is also a strong theme of giving useless unit specific abilities to the units you'll never use.
Crag Splitter [great sword]: 56 ATK, 15 DEF, +5% HP, earth element
Although 56 ATK is pretty bad in the current state of the game, this is the only earth elemental great sword. Make sure you have at least a couple of these just in case. This isn't worth making a bunch of extras for expeditions. Platinum Sword is craftable (uses somewhat rate mats but we never use them for anything) and Grinfield's TMR is much stronger than either.
Grasping Sphere [light shield]: 133 HP, 28 DEF/SPR, +30% earth resist, Carpet Bomb (AE 2x earth phys dmg, +50% DEF to caster for 2 turns, Barusa only)
Looking just at light shields, this is strictly inferior to Asfales (Moose trial reward) when looking at SPR, DEF, elemental coverage (both are 30% but Asfales has waster and wind too). The flat 133 HP is potentially better than the 10% HP for Asfales in some rare circumstances but in general +10% HP will win out. Only Hero's Shield has earth resist on a heavy shield but it is only 20%. Ignoring the earth resists, 28 SPR is decent but nothing special for any type of shield. 28 DEF is pretty low but still good if considering the 28 SPR that comes with it for when mixed damage or hybrid damage comes into play. Even if you have Asfales, try to get at least a couple of these for the earth resist.
Lightbringer [sword]: 96 ATK, light element, Morning Star (ST 2.2x phys light dmg, heal 15% HP to caster, Ray Jack only)
This is the only craftable item for which you can't get a dupe. As the only light sword in the game, this is a must have. The 96 ATK is pretty respectable too (solidly at TMR level). The Morning Star ability isn't even useful for use x element missions as the weapon already has the element. Fitting for Ray Jack, the sub's official limited rainbow whipping boy.
Salamander's Gauntlets [fist]: 66 ATK, fire element
The only other fire fist weapon is Wind Drake Talon which only has 58 ATK. This is a pure upgrade so get a couple of these and sell those useless Wind Drake Talons.
Staff of Blizzards [rod]: 78 MAG, 16 ATK, water element, Aquatic Implosion (AE 2x water magic dmg, +30% DEF to all allies for 3 turns, Kaliva only)
This is the item I hate the most in the game which shouldn't be any news to anyone that has been reading my posts. The name has staff and blizzard in it but it is a rod with water element. I would be convinced that it is okay due to the lore of KK but nobody has actually played that game so who cares if they change things. They gave Yang access to hammers which is a far greater sin than ignoring KK lore. Whoever is in charge of naming things at Gumi needs to be locked in the room with the guy at Alim that's obsessed with making fist
At 78 MAG, this is the strongest rod for which you can get several copies. That alone makes it worth farming as many as you can for expedition units. The only other water rod in the game is Water Drake's Rod with only 48 MAG. That also has +10% MP on it so not an automatic sell once you get the Staff of Misnomers but probably safe to sell for most of you (30 MAG difference is a bit over 15% MAG for most units so that's better than a 10% boost of MP for expedition purposes but extra MP is always useful on MK bonus units.)
This has a very niche use for Rem (dagger boomerang) in a water imperil team. However, other than building teams for fun I don't see that ever being a common strategy. Still, that makes a hell of a lot more sense than the item's name.
Wing Edges [dagger]: 45 ATK, Speed Plus (5% phys evade), wind element, Tornado Alley (AE 2x wind phys dmg, Toby only)
Strictly inferior to Zwill Crossblade (73 ATK, Speed Plus (5% phys evade)) but I suggest always having at least two of each weapon type and elemental combination if possible. Air Knife is slightly stronger at 48 ATK but if you have Zwill Crossblade, you're better off keeping Wing Edges over Air Knife due to the extra utility from 5% evade (3 ATK is pretty meaningless, especially with such weak weapons).
TMRs
Ray Jack's White Knight Soul [materia]⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: +40% ATK when equipped with a helm, +40% DEF when equipped with heavy armor. This is essentially Veritas of the Earth's TMR with different equipment requirements. This is a sad excuse for a rainbow TMR for a sad excuse of a rainbow unit (we'll see if his enhancements can redeem him). If you got the moogles then get it but don't ever farm this unless you have a dupe, his 7⭐ is confirmed, and his TMR ability is good (translation: just forget this exists).
Kaliva's Unmatched Wizardry [materia]⭐⭐⭐⭐: +50% equipment MAG when signle wielding a 1H weapon (essentially magic DH), +10% SPR
This is THE TMR for this banner. No other sources of magic DH in the game and units hitting 300% MAG cap easily makes this a great materia to have. Nothing game breaking like TDH, but this is BiS for some of the top mages. I happily got mine last time and have yet to use it...
Barusa's Cowered Courage [materia]⭐⭐⭐⭐: +30% DEF, +30% earth resist, Primal Instincts (AE -30% phys damage for 3 turns)
The gem here is the active ability that gives 30% physical mitigation. This stacks with general damage mitigation so it is quite powerful. Not as strong as the 40% mitigation on 9S's TMR but still a good ability. Main use will be when you are using a magic cover tank and still need to deal with a few strong AE physical attacks. So if you didn't get that other limited 4⭐ unit on a split 4⭐ banner then consider pulling for this limited 4⭐ unit on this split 4⭐ banner with no troll golds. EDIT: I completely forgot that Pod 153's damage mitigation is 2 turn only. Barusa's will be better for your rotation if you are keeping it up 100% of the time. 9S's will be better if you only put it up for thresholds or timed attacks once every 3 or more turns.
The +30% DEF and 30% earth resist are solid tank options when they are needed (especially when your magic tank needs to handle earth attacks and the occassional physical attack).
Toby's Turbulent Evasion [materia]⭐⭐⭐: +10% ATK, +20% wind resist, +5% physical evasion
You're better off farming Garnet's TMR for +20% resist to all elements. The ATK and evade bosot on this aren't really worth considering. If you get the specific moogles for it, might as well keep it for the wind resist but don't ever farm this with energy or ALL moogles.
Trials
A tad early but I already wrote it up so here you go.Tegmine
FYI, Degumin is just outright wrong. Thanks u/LewdisGewd for pointing that out and giving me a new reason to nerd rage over Gumi's name maiming decisions. An effective 400% finishing move isn't very useful but at least it is an elemental attack in case you need it for stupid use x element missions. I'm glad we finally have a strong hammer for all those units that prefer hammers. Like... umm... Ruggles. And... Verun? Oh HT Lid has innate hammer mastery and she's a meta unit. Oh, she doesn't really have any decent attack? Well at least there is the Hammersmith mastery materia for hammers that gives... +30% ATK? If any of you point out that Yang can use hammers, I'll bitch slap you so hard that this metaphor will seem awesome to you.
Equip Helm [materia]: Makes you look a tad more like Thor
This is a bit of an oddball equip materia. The main reasons you'd ever want to use this is to get more DEF on one of you 4⭐ magic tanks (for fights with magic attacks with physical damage). Even then, it's questionable if you'd want to use this because Patriotic Recall or even a +30% DEF materia will give you a lot more eHP. I guess other than the Cathood, it is a tad easier to get multiple elemental resists from helms than hats but you'd be better off using Garnet's (or Kryla's TMR) and Minfilia's is only slightly behind the best helms for elemental protection (of specific elements, not general coverage). The only other use for letting a hat wearing unit wear a helmet is extremely niche, but $5 is $5.
Scorn of Intangir
Enhancer+ [sword]: 106 ATK, 23 MAG, +10% HP, +20% MAGNot the worst weapon for your sword wielding hybrid or sowrd mage units, but also nowhere near the best. At least the high ATK makes it a decent weapon for a secondary physical attacker that prefers swords if you don't have one of the rainbow TMRs.
Lion's Awakening [materia]: +30% MAG, 10% chance to counter phys attacks with Meteor (AE 250% magic dmg with ignore 25% SPR)
The +30% MAG is good but nothing special if you've been playing a long time. But it's "free" if you can manage an LB kill so be prepared for that headache. The meteor counter is pretty worthless. The combination of low proc on the counter, countering only physical attacks, and needing high MAG for it to do more than a tickle makes this pretty useless under almost all circumstances.
Iron Giant
Iron Colossus [heavy armor]: 56 DEF, 15 ATKExcept times when you also need the dark resist, this is an upgrade to Demon Mail for ATK (55 DEF, 10 ATK). At 15 ATK, this is tied with Cloud's Uniform and Sephiroth's Coat for second highest flat ATK on a body piece. Only Goken's TMR is higher (20 ATK, clothes, male only). Heavy armor only TDH units can rejoice (are there any?).
H Armor Arts [materia]: +30% DEF/HP when equipped with heavy armor
This should almost always be BiS for a non-evade physical tank (Patriotic Recall only gives +30% HP, +20% DEF). For those of you that can manage 100% evade builds, you'll need to have either a rainbow magic tank or make use of the equip heavy armor materia to make use of this. This is stuck behind an annoying LB kill requirement so good luck with your timing.
Calamity Border [materia]: AE +80% DEF/SPR & +40% all elements for 2 turns
Ugh. 2 turn support abilities. 2 turn rotations are generally shitty with a few notable exceptions (Ling before enhancements and enhanced Soliel among others). On top of that, it uses 80 MP so spamming this every other turn won't be easy without a very good MP healer. The real value of this materia will be the flexibility it can give you with other units. For example, you could use this to help Ramza keep up DEF/SPR buffs while he's busy breaking. Or use this to give yourself some multi-element resists while Marie gives you status ailment resists. Definitely a solid materia but you really need to think through your strategy to make good use of it.
