I took two days to really think about the subject and discuss with others.
We just got a new update about death and spawning in Star Citizen. This is the first time that CLONING has been mentioned and to be honest I'm not surprised. I did a video called Permadeath will die before 2020. https://youtu.be/cGlG5bnmLjo That was January of last year and in it I asked the question, is the original plan too hardcore for the evolving game. I was basically saying that it will need to change and spoiler, it just evolved in a big way.
Let's take a look at what they are thinking will be the final mechanic and discuss the pros and cons. I will preface this by saying I have had 48 hours to think about it and to research other games that have this sort of proposed mechanic. I will also acknowledge that what was proposed is a real departure from Pitched Space Simulator and moves us well into Sci Fi or even beyond that into the more sensational Sci Fantasy territory. We need to work together to discuss what this means for the game we backed but, the issues is really down to an easy choice for Chris Roberts. To balance Fun Game that people will play with a Brutal Simulator that may put off the majority of the player base. A handful of you who may think the challenge of that game would be fun. To complete the opposite of a permadeath death mechanic is the idea of the familiar save points or checkpoints. These work well in Single player or PVE Co-Op games. Borderlands has a DIGISTRUCT mechanic which works a bit like a transporter and food replicator in one device. The devices are all over the play area for no reason, just like the vending machines that give out ammo. Its a fun and light mechanic that works there in that "Crazy Universe". Each time you use it, there is a service charge that sets you back, but later on in the game, you stop noticing the penalty. This isn't remotely suitable for star citizens framework as it's a multiplayer game, and it's super crazy. Other fast paced multiplayer games have the respawn mechanic that sets you back from the battle, costing your team time and possibly losing the momentum. Again, not at all appropriate or feasible for Star Citizen. Some have said what was explained on Friday is more like a Copy Paste Page out of EVEs playbook, or even a bit like 5th Element where they were able to rebuild an entire person from a small part or DNA. The Movie Elysium had a really cool medical bay which could rebuild and reanimate providing the person was mostly intact. Again, easy to accept as it was “The Future” but the machine could only do so much.
The more I think about it, the more I think I'm ok with this more middle of the road approach. There are parts of the CLONING explanation that still don't make sense. This might just need some magic "handwavium" built into the lore that needs to just be accepted by the player base.
Let me break down my concerns.
They said that when you are hurt beyond the DOWNED state, you are dead and wake up as a clone. You then can go see your dead self and collect your possessions. You have the reputation from before but have basically lost a life. Are your memories supposed to be included in the cloning process? If yes then HOW, and if NO, how is that different than just playing as a fully new character. Do we care how, I'd like to think we do. Would I remember me just before I got scanned by a medbay, or would I remember dying. Is it just Magic? Do we as players need an answer and do we even care? Would it be like the Matrix where my memory just downloaded and does that make me, Me, or someone else who looks like me?
If they are simply reanimating a clone based on your DNA, how and why would it eventually degrade to the point where it will just stop working. That part makes no sense except to introduce some game mechanic stress in running out of lives. Is there a clone just just waiting for me in the Med Bed somewhere? Do I need to die before they make my clone? Do I die and download to be reborn? Is it like "LeeLoo" in the Fifth Element? I am physically rebuilt or am I grown in a Vat. What's the service price for reanimating? Do I have to pay a monthly fee for that service? If I go and destroy someone's Medical Ship then kill them, they will just respawn further back down the line? What if I blow all of their save points up first. How far back do I send that player. Could that be seen as being really mean to a player or is it just part of the game. Are there stored bodies and DNA samples held all over the universe? Could I make a living just destroying medical hubs preventing my enemies from reanimating close to conflict, and thus turning the tide?
Here is my favorite set of questions. Would a fresh clone be reborn with a Scar or Cybernetics? If you are going to bother building a human from zero, why go through the extra BS of cutting its arm off and replacing it with an expensive surgery. Why would you bother to make the player aged. Why not make the player younger and stronger. Why would you bother to cut it up with scars? Why would I bother bother to go to the gym and stay in shape? There is no reason to grow a clone in anything but peak physical condition.
Rant Complete but i hope I have set a bunch of questions out there to think about. I am tracking the mechanic and I think from a game perspective it will make it more appealing for many more and help it last longer than one month after launch. Chrei and the team have a ton of Bullshit Weaving to spin this into lore that can remotely be anything but Science Fantasy. It's one thing for a society to not like making AI because they had a bad experience, but if cloning and reconstituting complete humans is a thing, then AI should be such a large leap as there is technically no death except for specific exceptions. Murder would be an inconvienence in this universe, so Why is murder something the ADVOCACY would invest time in policing. Does this mechanic then not just truly invalidate the idea of permadeath. Sure, I might die once too many times and it costs me money and reputation. I need to change my face and name. But then, I go out and die a bunch of times and do it all again. Some hard for RP players might get attached to their toon, personally, I don't think I will personally care after Noob #3. When I launch the game I currently just take the default Avatar and hit go. I probably will just put a number after my name each time I die to keep track, and not bother with any sort of backstory. This does answer the Boom Headshot issue where no amount of reconstruction would reconstitute a brain that had been turned to red mist. That original explanation worked until you factored in a 50 cal to the head or a total loss due to your ship exploding. Again, I am more Ok with what was explained than not, and as you have become accustomed to short videos, all of this really comes down to you, your ideas and the discussion that comes from it.
