First Time Posting Here, So Here's a Tutorial Based On How I Record Lossless Gameplay Footage (NVIDIA Only)

Hey all, my name is Deej and I haven't been doing Let's Plays or gameplay recordings for very long (used to exclusively stream). This tutorial is based on various different sources I've found on the web while trying to figure out how to get the best recordings I can while also spending as little as possible and getting the best gaming to recording performance I could get. Enjoy!
Software Required * OBS-Studio (0.14+ required for this to work) - Free * FFMpeg (required to reencode original recording with the UTVideo lossless codec before editing) - Free * UTVideo Codec (requires a big hard drive due to reencoded file being much bigger than the original) - Free
My PC Hardware (Taken from Twitch Page) * Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro Full-Tower, Fully Modular * CPU: AMD FX-8320E 3.20 GHz Octa-Core * Motherboard: ASUS M5A99FX Pro R2.0 * RAM: 32 GB DDR3 Hyper Fury-X 1866 Speed * GPU: ZOTAC GTX 1070 8 GB AMP! Extreme Edition * Harddrive(s): 240 GB Hyper Fury-X SSD (Windows) 4 TB Western Digital HDD (Games, Software, Backup) 1 TB Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD (Recording / Caching Drive Only) * Microphone: Audio Technica AT 2035 XLR with Shure Digital XLR to USB Adapter (48V Phantom Power Built in) * Webcam: Logitech c920 HD * Mouse: Redragon Mammoth * Keyboard: Gateway Generic KB-0401 * Gamepad: Sony Dual Shock 4 (with latest SCPToolkit Drivers) * OS: Windows 10 Anniversary Edition 64-bit
NOTES * This tutorial requires having a 600+ Series Nvidia GTX GPU due to using NVENC (Nvidia's proprietary encoder that Shadowplay uses to record gameplay footage). * 1080p 60 fps recordings will require a pretty beefy GPU to keep the framerate consistent (my old GTX 970 had issues staying above 45 fps consistently while playing Black Ops III with all settings maxed out even though the game was running on my GTX 1070) * Also, even though it's not being directly used for recording, your CPU will definitely affect things. OBS has always seemed heavily dependent on CPU, so the more cores you have and more powerful, the better. My CPU does pretty well for most games with almost no framerate drop in my recordings minus some rare exceptions (such as a few Source and Unity Engine games). * The faster your recording hard drive, the better. 7200 RPM works really well but I've read that you can get away with a 5400 RPM one if strapped. * This won't be true lossless recording but it'll be close enough that when you reencode with UTVideo, you shouldn't notice any major loss in quality, especially in higher action or busier scenes (need to do more testing, so it could still be moot)
Main Tutorial 1. Download and install all required software. 2. Open OBS-Studio and open Settings Window 3. Click Output Tab on left 4. Setup Output similar to this - I record in FLV because Windows 10 sometimes crashes / freezes OBS-Studio and it’s the only format that can be salvaged when that happens; it doesn’t allow for multiple audio tracks, though. If you need to record mic / game / whatever audio in OBS, the MKV format works just as well but may be slightly slower. Encoder must be set to NVENC H.264 and Rate Control must be set to Lossless (even though the recording won’t be lossless; if you edit / reencode, there’s a chance of artifacting and other issues depending on the game; more on this later). The rest require your testing and judgment and are well outside the scope of this tutorial. Also, GPU is only useful when you have multiple GPUs and would love to dedicate one to gaming and the other to recording only. 5. Go to Video Tab on left and set accordingly - Scaling filters won’t matter due to no downscaling and recording raw resolution. 6. Webcam is optional but you will need to add either a Monitor Capture (use Borderless Fullscreen Mode for most games if you have issues with this) or several individual Window / Game Captures. You can right click it and click Transform, Fit to Full Screen.
Side-Notes: * Recording like this can be really useful if you ever decide to add overlays or other information to your content later on and don't feel like messing with it post production; future proofing
7.Press your hotkey and you should see your game showing up in OBS-Studio like this 8.Download and extract the latest 32-bit or 64-bit static FFMpeg build from the site linked earlier. Remember where you extracted it to for the next few steps. 9.Right-Click your Start Menu and click System - doing this to make it so much easier to access FFMpeg for next few steps 10.Click Advanced System Settings 11.Make sure you’re on Advanced tab and click Environment Variables 12.Find the Path variable under System Variables, click on it and click Edit… like here 13.Follow the numbered steps here and keep clicking OK until all windows but DXTory, the game and OBS-Studio are closed (along with whatever else you wanted left open) 14.I would highly recommend installing Git Bash for Windows for the next few steps - it’s one of the best terminal apps I’ve used and is really useful for various different things 15.If you haven’t done it, make sure you have the UTVideo codec installed and that your gameplay recordings are on a 1TB or larger harddrive and that you have several hundred gigabytes of space available. UTVideo requires a massive amount of space to encode and will take some time based on size and length of recording. Very important that you follow this step!!!! 16.Open the folder where you saved your gameplay recordings at with OBS-Studio (or copied to due to space) and right-click and click Git Bash Here to open a terminal prompt 17.This last step is for advanced users only but is well worth doing; also insert the recording file name where it says at in code below and replace with whatever you like as long as it has the .avi at end with no space. Don’t just copy and paste!!! If you start typing the name and hit Tab key, it should automatically fill in full filename; if not, tap it a couple of times to see all files with similar names and add next missing letters / numbers until it finishes filling it in.
ffmpeg -i -c:v utvideo -c:a copy .avi
What this does is it reencodes your footage in a lossless format while just copying over the audio and not reencoding it at all. Go do something else because this can take a long while to complete but once it’s done, exit out of Git Bash.
If you are using Sony Vegas or Premiere Pro, you should be able to just drag and drop your newly created avi file onto your timeline and edit and render like normal. If you use Davinci Resolve (like I do; impo the best FREE video editing software out there but requires a really beefy system to do anything with) or some other programs, you will need to reencode as an MP4 file using libx264 and whatever audio codec you want to use.
If you have any questions, concerns or suggestions, feel free to post them below. Thanks. xD

They’ve released all of the deck lists for all of the competitors and you can find those here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/events/coverage/2019MC3/all-mythic-championship-iii-standard-decklists
As mundane as Esper control is right now, I found one in particular a bit peculiar.

Best of 3 - Dreadhorde Control (Shota Yasooka - YAYA3)

4 Narset, Parter of Veils (WAR) 61 3 Teferi, Time Raveler (WAR) 221 3 Teferi, Hero of Dominaria (DAR) 207 3 Basilica Bell-Haunt (RNA) 156 1 The Elderspell (WAR) 89 3 Kaya's Wrath (RNA) 187 3 Oath of Kaya (WAR) 209 4 Thought Erasure (GRN) 206 2 Command the Dreadhorde (WAR) 82 2 Revitalize (M19) 35 2 Cast Down (DAR) 81 2 Discovery // Dispersal (GRN) 223 2 Bolas's Citadel (WAR) 79 4 Isolated Chapel (DAR) 241 4 Glacial Fortress (XLN) 255 4 Hallowed Fountain (RNA) 251 4 Godless Shrine (RNA) 248 4 Drowned Catacomb (XLN) 253 4 Watery Grave (GRN) 259 1 Plains (M19) 261 1 Swamp (DAR) 260 1 The Elderspell (WAR) 89 3 Duress (M19) 94 2 Enter the God-Eternals (WAR) 196 1 Despark (WAR) 190 1 Basilica Bell-Haunt (RNA) 156 2 Ixalan's Binding (XLN) 17 3 Cry of the Carnarium (RNA) 70 2 Search for Azcanta (XLN) 74
This looks to be a fairly stock tapout control deck trying to take over the board with planeswalkers and sweepers. And everything seems normal until you get down to the two copies of Bolas’s Citadel. I’ve seen the card used in many Green/Black decks that run the Explore package, and I’ve even seen it in a few aggressive non-green decks. But I’ve never seen it in a control deck like this. I almost expect that is tech to fight the other Esper control decks, considering life total is rarely the deciding factor in the outcome.
I’m going to be keeping a close eye on Yasooka to see how this deck fares against a field completely swamped with Esper control.

Best of 3 - Grixis Aggro

I’ve been trying to find a Grixis deck that can hold its own against the meta since Big Daddy Bolas was previews a few months back, and it just hasn’t happened yet. But Jim Davis showed off a sweet Grixis Aggro deck that looked a bit more like a Rakdos deck that splashes Blue for a few high impact cards.
4 Shock (M19) 156 2 Duress (M19) 94 2 Lightning Strike (M19) 152 3 Bedevil (RNA) 157 4 Dreadhorde Butcher (WAR) 194 3 Kitesail Freebooter (XLN) 110 4 Legion Warboss (GRN) 109 4 Thief of Sanity (GRN) 205 2 Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God (WAR) 207 4 Nicol Bolas, the Ravager (M19) 218 4 Thought Erasure (GRN) 206 4 Watery Grave (GRN) 259 4 Steam Vents (GRN) 257 4 Blood Crypt (RNA) 245 4 Dragonskull Summit (XLN) 252 4 Drowned Catacomb (XLN) 253 3 Sulfur Falls (DAR) 247 1 Swamp (DAR) 260 2 Disdainful Stroke (GRN) 37 2 Duress (M19) 94 2 Enter the God-Eternals (WAR) 196 1 Finale of Eternity (WAR) 91 2 Fungal Infection (DAR) 94 1 Hostage Taker (XLN) 223 3 Lava Coil (GRN) 108 2 The Elderspell (WAR) 89
As you can see the curve on this deck is just fantastic, starting all the way down at one with Shock and Duress, and topping out at the Dragon-God. The goal is to get down early beats they have to answer in your two drops with Dreadhorde Butcher and Kitesail Freebooter, then really lay into them with Legion Warboss and Thief of Sanity. Hopefully by the time you drop your Thief of Sanity they will have exhausted their early removal and you can just take over the game. This is the closest list I’ve seen, power-wise, to the Grixis lists from last year that ran Glint-Sleeve Siphoner and The Scarab God.

Best of 1 - WB Knights

4 Knight of Grace (DAR) 23 4 Knight of Malice (DAR) 97 3 Midnight Reaper (GRN) 77 3 Oath of Kaya (WAR) 209 4 Tocatli Honor Guard (XLN) 42 2 Command the Dreadhorde (WAR) 82 3 Despark (WAR) 190 4 History of Benalia (DAR) 21 3 Gideon Blackblade (WAR) 13 3 Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord (WAR) 217 2 Mortify (RNA) 192 2 Baffling End (RIX) 1 10 Plains (RIX) 192 5 Swamp (RIX) 194 4 Godless Shrine (RNA) 248 4 Isolated Chapel (DAR) 241
I’ve been playing around with this deck a bit lately, and it seems like it has good matchups across the board. The plan is pretty simple. Let your Knight of Grace and Malice gum up the early game with their first strikeyness, keep your opponent from doing any ETB nonsense (Explore, Chupacabra, Viashino Pyromancer) with Tocatli Honor Guard, and grind out the long game with History of Benalias and your two planeswalkers, Gideon and Sorin. I think the Midnight Reaper is what really makes this deck churn. Did you realize it's also a Knight? I didn’t until I was building this deck. Gideon can keep the beats going and Sorin can bring them back from the dead.

Best of 1 - Mono Blue Tempo

4 Siren Stormtamer (XLN) 79 4 Pteramander (RNA) 47 4 Merfolk Trickster (DAR) 56 4 Tempest Djinn (DAR) 68 2 God-Eternal Kefnet (WAR) 53 4 Opt (DAR) 60 3 Dive Down (XLN) 53 3 Spell Pierce (XLN) 81 2 Chart a Course (XLN) 48 2 Essence Capture (RNA) 37 4 Wizard's Retort (DAR) 75 4 Curious Obsession (RIX) 35 20 Island (M19) 267
This deck all but fell off the map until this past week or so when it started showing up again triggering my anxiety about hopping back into the ladder. Just when you think it’s gone, Mono Blue Shitters is back at it and apparently tearing up everything that’s not Mono Red. None of this even makes sense, because Mono Red and Esper are the biggest decks out there right now. I’m not sure why this is showing up, but it’s an updated deck list with Kefnets, and it seems to be doing really well. Or maybe it’s just doing well for the few people who tracking with it, and against me exclusively.
I honestly don’t think I dislike a single deck more than this one. But someone has to be the fun police.

War of the Spark Chronicles

The fifth and final week is starting today with Ravnica Constructed
Bring a 60-card deck consisting only of cards from Guilds of Ravnica, Ravnica Allegiance, and War of the Spark. Gates Ablaze is banned in this format.
As you’ve noticed, Gates Ablaze is banned from the format, thankfully. Gates was really the only deck to run when Ravnica Allegiance came out, and I remember breezing through that weekend event.
You can certainly still play a Gates deck if you want, but you’ll need to get creative with your board wipes.
On the other hand, I think I’ll be trying something more like this:

Ravnica Constructed - Orzhov Sacrifice

4 Gutterbones (RNA) 76 4 Cruel Celebrant (WAR) 188 4 Priest of Forgotten Gods (RNA) 83 4 Tithe Taker (RNA) 27 2 Plaguecrafter (GRN) 82 4 Midnight Reaper (GRN) 77 4 Seraph of the Scales (RNA) 205 3 Sorin, Vengeful Bloodlord (WAR) 217 1 Liliana, Dreadhorde General (WAR) 97 3 Spark Harvest (WAR) 105 1 Despark (WAR) 190 1 Mortify (RNA) 192 1 Command the Dreadhorde (WAR) 82 11 Swamp (WAR) 257 9 Plains (WAR) 251 4 Godless Shrine (RNA) 248
A friend of mine, u/zombie_guy86 recommended something similar to this and I found another deck very close to this list that got fourth place at a SCG IQ last weekend. It’s a very aggressive deck, similar to my Knights deck above, but has a healthy dose of sacrifice that can get you through board stalls. I really don’t know how this one is going to work, as unlike most decks I post here, I haven’t actually played this one, and I definitely haven’t played it in the metagame we’re going to see in this event. If you do end up running it, let me know what you think.

Finishing Touches

That’s it for this week, and there’s really only one more full week of this Standard before Core 2020 releases. So I’ll be back next week to give some of my thoughts to wrap up WAR Standard, and have a few early brews ready for you to put together as soon as possible after release.
There’s a new site out there www.mtgazone.com that has a lot of articles similar to this one, so if you’re looking for more written content to consume, that might be a good place to look. I’m not affiliated with them in any way, but wanted to shout them out here to give them a bit more exposure.
As always, post up some sweet decks you've brewed or come across in your travels down below, and have a great weekend!
