Big Sean is a guy who's lucky to have friends, but honestly I'd rather hear a total mismatch like Method Man or something on these beats just so I might be surprised by a single word that comes out of the chosen rapper's mouth. The Last 15 MLS Rookies of the Year: Where are they now

With the news that MLS is axing the Rookie of the Year award in favor of a more general Young Player of the Year award - a smart change, by the way - I decided to put out this OC I've been sitting on for a while.
No intro writeup, just gonna get right to it.
2005: Michael Parkhurst - Retired
A New England native - he's from Providence, Rhode Island - Parkhurst was chosen with the 9th pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft out of Wake Forest, and was a key piece for a very good Revs side over his four seasons in Foxboro, logging 115 league appearances, reaching three MLS Cups (though they famously lost all three) and earning MLS Defender of the Year in 2007. He would sign with Nordsjælland in Denmark on a free, would play 107 times between 2008 and 2012, before a rather pointless year at Augsburg, where he appeared just twice. In 2014 he'd return to MLS with Columbus, where he'd appear 100 times over three seasons and reaching (and losing) a fourth MLS Cup, and was traded to Atlanta prior to the Five Stripes' first season. He'd be the club captain, appearing 84 times and capturing that MLS Cup that proved so elusive in 2018. He retired after 2019.
2006: (Chivas USA) Jonathan Bornstein - Chicago Fire
Bornstein started as a forward in college, but upon being snagged in the fourth round of the SuperDraft, he was converted to a left back by Bob Bradley. That paid off handsomely for Bornstein, who would be in MLS's Best XI by his sophomore season. He played 123 league regular season matches for Chivas before moving to Mexican side Tigres, where he'd hardly play. A 2015 loan move to Queretaro would rejuvenate his career somewhat, and he'd play 94 times - including 81 after the loan became permanent. He'd then spend 2018-19 with Maccabi Netanya in Israel before returning to MLS with Chicago.
2007: Maurice Edu - Retired
Oh, how the demise of Rangers was not good to Edu. A box to box mid who ended his career as a center back, Edu spent a season and a half with TFC before being sold to Rangers for £2.6 million, and would play four seasons on the blue side of Glasgow, winning the SPL three times. When Rangers were liquidated, Mo signed for Stoke, where he'd appear just once. He spent some time on loan in Turkey before joining Philadelphia in 2014 on loan. The deal was made permanent in 2015 after he appeared 31 times for the U in 2014 (and captained the side in the Open Cup final), but after a second consecutive USOC final defeat, he went down with a groin injury that ended his season, and spent the next two full seasons out with leg injuries. He trialed with LAFC before 2018, didn't make the team, and retired.
2008: Sean Franklin - Retired
A defender out of Cal State Northridge, Franklin is the first on this list that spent his whole career in MLS. In his five seasons with the Galaxy, Franklin appeared in 160 matches, and earned a pair of Supporters' Shields and MLS Cups. He joined DC that offseason via the Re-Entry Draft, would play in 101 games in four seasons there, then spent 2018 with Vancouver before retiring.
2009: Omar Gonzalez - Toronto
Back to back Galaxy defenders here. The 2008 Galaxy finished tied for bottom of the West, and used their #3 overall pick on the big central defender from Maryland. Given that he played 223 competitive matches for them, won Defender of the Year in 2011, was Best XI four times, and won 3 MLS Cups and two Supporters' Shields...worth it. He was sold to Pachuca after the 2015 season, where he'd spend 3 seasons where he'd lift a Clausura title and a CONCACAF Champions League, before returning to MLS in 2019 with TFC. He's fallen off a bit this season, but at his best, Omar was a winner and one of the best in MLS. This was also a stacked class that also included Matt Besler, Stefan Frei, Graham Zusi, AJ DeLaGarza, and pre-injuries versions of Steve Zakuani and George John.
2010: Andy Najar - LAFC
The first Homegrown Player to win the award, Najar won Rookie of the Year as a 17 year old. He'd spend two more seasons with DC before being sold to Anderlecht for $3 million. He appeared in 126 league matches for the Belgian side (predominantly at right back), winning two league titles and appearing in the Champions League, though his latter years were hobbled by a series of knee injuries. He returned to MLS this season with LAFC, where he has logged 180 minutes thus far.
2011: CJ Sapong - Chicago Fire
Edging out Perry Kitchen and Michael Farfan for ROTY 2011, Sapong spent four seasons and scored 20 goals with Sporting, playing both as a center forward in a 4-3-3 and on the wing. He won the Open Cup in 2012 and MLS Cup in 2013 with KC, then was traded to Philadelphia after the 2014 season for some Garber Bucks. He appeared in 123 games (would've been more if not for a genuine bullshit DUI), scoring 36 goals, including a 16 goal 2017. But after some struggles in 2018, he was shipped to Chicago for Garber Bucks, and scored 13 goals in his first season.
2012: Austin Berry - Cincinnati coaching staff
Berry better have dedicated this award to Arne Friedrich, the Hertha BSC legend who played alongside the rookie Berry in Frank Klopas's defense. Okay, that might be a biiit harsh, but Berry fell off after Friedrich stopped playing. He appeared in 62 games in two seasons for Chicago before being traded to Philly, where he'd play just 6 times due to injuries and poor form. A brief loan in Korea followed before Berry joined Cincinnati, his hometown side, ahead of their inaugural 2016 season. He called it a career in December 2017 and became the club's strength & conditioning coach.
2013: Dillon Powers - Dundee United
Powers's pro career started fine enough - 10 goals and 15 assists from midfield in his first two seasons. However, he wound up stagnating as over the next two seasons his numbers and minutes dropped, and by 2017 he was shipped out to Orlando (for Garber Bucks and Luis Gil), where he hardly played. He's out in Scotland now with Dundee United, where he's made 6 SPL appearances so far this season, and where he's teamed up with another ex-MLS player in Ian Harkes.
2014: Tesho Akindele - Orlando City
The second D2 alum to win ROTY (after Rodrigo Faria in 2001, who went to Concordia College), the former Colorado School of Mines Oredigger was primarily a bench piece in Dallas, and not a bad one at that. In 132 games, he scored 24 goals, and helped the Hoops win the USOC-Shield double in 2016. He was traded to Orlando in 2018, and currently has 13 goals in 42 MLS games for the Lions.
2015: Cyle Larin - Beşiktaş
It's hard to find a better debut season than 17 goals as a center forward, but Larin did just that for expansion Orlando. In his three seasons with the Lions, he racked up 43 goals in 87 appearances, though his output did decline all three seasons. After 2017, though, he kiiinda strongarmed his way out, refusing to train before being sold to Beşiktaş. He's played 21 games for them since, scoring six goals, and spent 2019-20 on loan at Zulte Waregem in Belgium, scoring 7 goals in 29 games. He's now back with the Turkish outfit.
2016: Jordan Morris - Seattle Sounders
This, for me, was the last great Rookie of the Year battle. Morris had all the hype coming in, as he'd been capped by the USMNT while still at Stanford, and he did live up to his buzz, though #1 SuperDraft pick Jack Harrison and surprise standout Keegan Rosenberry made him earn this award. Despite a sophomore slump and an entire missed 2018 season due to a blown ACL suffered in CCL, he has since bounced back strong and is one of the league's better scoring wingers, with 18 goals in 45 games the last two regular seasons.
2017: Julian Gressel - DC United
The #8 pick in the 2017 SuperDraft, the former Providence Friar (Hockey East represent! yes i know this is soccer) was a key player right away for the expansion Five Stripes, logging over 2,000 minutes on a strong team that made the playoffs, scoring five goals and adding nine assists in his debut season. He'd then average double digit assists in his next two seasons with Atlanta, establishing himself as a solid piece of a team that in that time span won MLS Cup, a US Open Cup, and the Campeones Cup. Last winter, he was traded to DC for $750K in allocation money, and while he's struggled in his first season in the District (he only has 2 goals and 2 assists in 1,592 minutes), he is now free of Ben Olsen, so he could be due for a bounceback in 2021.
2018: Corey Baird - Real Salt Lake
The third and final homegrown player to win the award in this incarnation, Baird scored 8 goals and chipped in five assists in his debut season for the Claret and Cobalt as a 22 year old. In his three seasons in Utah thus far, he's scored 15 goals and added 13 assists in 5,271 minutes played.
2019: Andre Shinyashiki - Colorado Rapids
After eating the Summit League for breakfast in the Rapids' backyard at the University of Denver, Colorado snagged the Brazilian with the 5th pick in the 2019 SuperDraft, and it paid off immediately as on his debut Shinyashiki scored a stoppage time equalizer in a blizzard against Portland. On the season, he scored 7 goals and added 3 assists in 1,670 minutes. This season, in 780 minutes, he has 3 goals and 1 assist, including one last night at Minnesota.
